Abstract Soviet leaders sent troops into Afghanistan in December 1979 to support a friendly Marxist-Leninist regime its conflict against popular insurgency and help it build new society. When the withdrew nine years later, they left behind state that had none of nominal characteristics Soviet-type Communist country. During war, People's Democratic Party discarded Marxism-Leninism turned Islam. This article examines how, with Moscow's support, Afghan Communists Islamicized their discourse policies as tried gain from population co-opt insurgent fighters.
